"Third" is a play written by Wendy Wasserstein, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theater in New York City in 2004. The play centers around the character of Laurie Jameson, a feminist literature professor at a prestigious liberal arts college, who begins to feel increasingly out of place in her own classroom as she struggles to relate to a new generation of students. When she accuses one of her male students of plagiarism and faces a backlash from both her department and her personal life, Laurie is forced to confront her own prejudices and assumptions about the world. "Third" deals with themes of identity, gender politics, and the clash of generations, and is known for its sharp, intelligent dialogue and memorable characters. Wendy Wasserstein was known for her insightful and witty plays that tackle issues faced by women in contemporary society, and "Third" is widely considered to be one of her most powerful works. The play was posthumously published in 2006, after Wasserstein's death from lymphoma.
